Protists as Indicators of Pollution

Article Abstract:

A database program for monitoring water pollution level is discussed. The program relies on information obtained through laboratory procedures in its analysis of water quality. It is equipped with two double sided disks, one containing the system program and another that stores the sample data set being used in the investigation. These data are presented by the program in either graphical or table form, allowing the users to analyze the test results. However, the program comes with an improperly matched printer interface card selection menu that limits the capability of the system.

Ward's Smart Slides: Animal and Plant Mitosis Study Set

Article Abstract:

The Ward's Smart Slides software offers full-color scanned images of actual slides of animal and plant cells undergoing mitosis. The software consists of four 3.5 in. disks, retails for $119 and is available in Macintosh or IBM/Windows format. The software package does not compare with similar packages in the CD-ROM format and suffers from dull images and explanatory texts. Other limitations include the inability of the 'slides' to be manipulated or focused to any area of interest.

Gene Jockey: Sequence Processor

Article Abstract:

A low-cost Macintosh-based personal computer program for DNA and protein analysis is discussed. The Gene Jockey program uses hierarchical menus and is capable of designing optimized polymerase chains and calculating dot-plot matrices. It also has the important features of an ideal DNA analysis software, such as database search and simulated restriction analysis. This program fares better than other software packages in terms of system cost and performance.
