Release of imethylsulfide from dimethylsulfoniopropionate by plant-associate salt marsh fungi

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the distribution of dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) lyase-producing fungi associated with DMSP-producing, halophytic plants in the salt marsh. Seven species of smooth cordgrass ascomycetes, two species of ascomycetes from other DMSP-containing plants and 11 species of ascomycetes and mitosporic fungi from halophytes without DMSP were tested. Results suggest a strong correlation between the host plant's production of DMSP as a secondary product and the fungal decomposer's ability to catabolize DMSP through the DMSP lyase pathway.

Identification and characterization of a Pantoea citrea gene encoding glucose dehydrogenase that is essential for causing pink disease of pineapple

Article Abstract:

The eneterobacteria Pantoea citrea open reading frame of 2,361 bp encodes glucose dehydrogenase (GDH) that is essential for the development of pink disease in pineapple. The nucleotide sequence of this region is similar to that of genes encoding GDH in Escherichia coli and Acinetobacter calcoaceticus. The P. citrea GDH has a molecular mass of 86.2 kDa and contains a binding domain for the cofactor pyrroloquinoline quinone. GDH is important for the biosynthesis of gluconate, whose addition to a strain lacking GDP restores the juice- and fruit-discoloring activity.

gdhB, a gene encoding a second quinoprotein glucose dehydrogenase in Pantoea citrea, is required for pink disease of pineapple

Article Abstract:

It was shown that the presence of a second gdh gene, gdhB, is the primary enzyme involved in Gdh activity associated with the development of the pink disease of pineapples. Escherichia coli strains were grown at 37 degrees C in LB or M9 media. Plasmid screening was then carried out by alkaline lysis. Moreover, the pink disease test was performed in pineapple juice while the Gdh activity was determined on MGY agar supporting 2% glucose and eosin yellow/methylene blue.
