Repertoire, structure, and individual distinctiveness of Thick-billed Murre calls

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the four distinct calls made by the chicks and six distinct calls made by the adult Thick-billed Murre during the breeding season. The birds' vocal repertoire is discussed.

Food supply and the consequences of egg size in the Thick-Billed Murre

Article Abstract:

Research describing the effect of egg size on chick development in the Thick-Billed Murre (Uria lomvia) at colonies in Nunavut, Canada,is presented. Comparisons between colonies with differing food availability do not fully explain the considerable variation in egg size.

Factors affecting the success of colony departure by Thick-billed Murre chicks

Article Abstract:

Factors affecting the success of colony departure by Thick-billed Murre chicks were studied to investigate the effects of predation, nest site characteristics and adult murre aggression on the likelihood that chicks departed to sea. Results show that drowning, a result of adult murre aggression , was the common cause of mortality. However, a significant cause of chick mortality at colony departure was the separation of chick and parent before reaching the sea.
