Species limits and recent population history in the curve-billed thrasher

Article Abstract:

Research examining genetic aspects of curve-billed thrashers in order to establish groups of bird populations is presented. Particular attention is given to measurements of mitochondrial DNA sequences which led to species differentiations.

Comparative phylogeography of some aridland bird species

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the levels of congruence which exist among six species of birds living on the aridlands of North America. The genetic divisions caused by isolation are discussed.

Species limits in the Le Conte's thrasher

Article Abstract:

Patterns of geographic variation as well as subspecific and species limits were examined by investigating patterns of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and colorimetric variation in the Le Conte's thrasher, with the scientific name of Toxostoma lecontei (T.l.). A total of 619 base pairs of mtDNA for birds from nine localities which represent three subspecies were sequenced. It was found that T.l. lecontei and T.l. arenicola require species status while T.l. macmillanorum does not seem to be a separate taxon. Lecontei and macmillanorum shared haplotypes while the haplotypes of arenicola differed significantly from those of lecontei and macmillanorum.
