Reprogramming of early embryonic blastomeres into endodermal progenitors by a Caenorhabditis elegans GATA factor

Article Abstract:

Ubiquitous end-1 expression in a critical period in embryogenesis makes all nonendodermal lineages produce endoderm instead of mesoderm and/or ectoderm. The END-1 GATA factor is implicated in calling for endoderm in Caenorhabditis elegans. It is the earliest zygotic protein known to be expressed in lineage of E, which is the clonal endoderm progenitor. In endoderm formation END-1 expression gets around the requirement for the maternal Wnt signaling pathway and maternal SKN-1. That would indicate that perhaps a main function of the maternal factors is regulating zygotic end-1 expression. It is then adequate for the initiation of all of the endoderm development program.

Insulin worms its way into the spotlight

Article Abstract:

Insulin signaling is the object of much interest since its central role in life span and aging in Caenorhabditis elegans was discovered and then found to exist also in Drosophila and mammals. Some insulin signals come from neurons and act elswhere. T he study of the insulin pathway in the overall organism will bring new insights.

mRNA 5'-leader trans-splicing in the chordates

Article Abstract:

Research reports the discovery of mRNA 5'-leader trans-splicing in ascidians, which are primitive chordates. Previously, splice donor trans-splicing RNAs were described only in protist and some metazoans.
