Role of genetic and environmetal factors in the increased blood pressures of Bolivian Blacks

Article Abstract:

Genetic factors seem to predispose black people to higher blood pressures, but expression of clinical hypertension is affected by adverse environmental factors according to a study in Bolivia. In that country roles played by environment and genetic factors in the higher blood pressures of black people have been studied by taking data on 159 subjects aged 17-78 in black and nonblack populations. The prevalence of hypertension in blacks was higher than in nonblacks, but three times lower than in blacks in the US. Skin reflectance was inversely related to blood pressures.

Human physiological adaptation to pregnancy: Inter- and intraspecific perspectives

Article Abstract:

Inter- and intraspecific perspectives are used to highlight the unique features of the human physiological adaptation to pregnancy and their significance for reproductive successes. Both these perspectives suggest that natural selection has in the past and continues to operate in the present on maternal physiological responses to pregnancy.

A genomewide admixture mapping panel for Hispanic/Latino populations

Article Abstract:

A genomewide admixture mapping (AM) panel for Hispanic/Latino populations is described. The AM panel has 2,120 ancestry markers and the main criteria for marker selection were both high information content for Native American/European ancestry and small frequency differences between the Mesoamerican and South American samples.
