Influence of pH, oxygen and humic substances on ability of sunlight to damage fecal coliforms in waste stabilization pond water

Article Abstract:

The ability of sunlight to damage fecal coliforms in waste stabilization ponds is greatly influenced by environmental factors. Beaker experiments show that lightwavelengths of up to 700 nm can damage coliforms via an oxygen-dependent photosensitization. Wavelengths greater than 425 nm require the presence of humic substances in order to be effective. These substances act as sensitizers that enhance the toxic effects of the sun. An elevated pH also promotes coliform damage by a still unknown mechanism.

/3H~Thymidine incorporation to estimate growth rates of anaerobic bacterial strains

Article Abstract:

The use of /3H~thymidine incorporation as an index to measure growth in three types of anaerobic bacteria was investigated. Three groups of anaerobes were used, namely, fermenters, methanogens and sulfate producers. All the fermenters and one methanogen incorporated /3H~ thymidine, while the sulfate producer did not. Thus, the use of this method would underestimate anaerobic bacterial growth rates as the growth of only one group could be analyzed.
