Searching chromatin for stem cell identity

Article Abstract:

Stem cells encapsulate the fundamental problem of metazoan biology in miniature, and increasing evidence indicates that stem cell chromatin activates proliferation genes and represses differentiation genes. Understanding how Polycomb group proteins stabilize these configurations will advance the understanding of embryonic development, tissue homeostasis, regeneration, aging and oncogenesis.

Intergenic transcription through a polycomb group response element counteracts silencing

Article Abstract:

The switch from the silenced to the activated state of a polycomb group response element (PRE) is presented that requires noncoding transcription by using a transgenic reporter system. Results concluded that all other PREs corresponding target gene, suggesting that anti-selecting by transcription is a fundamental aspect of the cellular memory system.

The Drosophila P68 RNA helicase regulates transcription deactivation by promoting RNA release from chromatin

Article Abstract:

The Drosophila homolog of the mammalian P68 RNA helicase is shown which plays a novel role in RNA export. Observations reveal a strong connection between transcript clearance and gene repression and P68 may be needed rapidly to move transcripts from a gene before its activity can be shut down and its chromatin reset to an inactive state.
