Seasonality in Antarctic airborne fungal spores

Article Abstract:

Airborne fungal spores were observed for periods of up to 13 1/2 months at three locations on Signy Island in the maritime Antarctic. Fungal spore concentrations in the air were much lower than in the other parts of the world. Concentrations are very low during the austral winter but increased during the austral summer. Chlamydosphores were the most frequently found fungal spore type. Cladosporium spp. spores were the second most abundant.

Identification of volatile metabolites from five fungal species cultivated on two media

Article Abstract:

Analysis of the volatile metabolites produced by five fungal species revealed a large number of compounds whose production was dependent on the species and the culture medium, and a few commonly produced compounds that may be useful markers of mold growing in buildings. Air samples from culture flasks of the fungi growing in either malt extract agar or dichloran glycerol agar were analyzed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry.

Green fluorescent protein is lighting up fungal biology

Article Abstract:

The use of green fluorescent protein as a marker of gene expression in fungi is reviewed. Topics include engineered GFP genes, GFP as a reporter gene, cell dynamics with GFP, visualizing host-fungi relationships, and GFP tagging of filamentous fungi.
