Sequence and expression of amphioxus alkali myosin light chain (AmphiMLC-alk) throughout development: implications for vertebrate myogenesis

Article Abstract:

The amphioxus gene for alkali myosin light chain (AmphiMLC-alk) codes for a 147-amino-acid protein and forms one transcript that is expressed throughout development and in adults. Gene expression is observed in the early myotomes of somites 2-5 of neurula embryos, then in the myotomes of somite 1 and in myotomes of fresh somites. This gene expression occurs along the medial edge of the myotome and at the cell ends in late larvae and adults. An analysis of myogenesis in amphioxus can explain the evolutionary history and pathways of vertebrate myogenesis, because amphioxus myogenesis is identical to that of the vertebrate.

A Gbx homeobox gene in amphioxus: insights into ancestry of the ANTP class and evolution of the midbrain/hindbrain boundary

Article Abstract:

A study on cloning the gene of an amphioxus to examine its central nervous system is discussed. The origin of its midbrain and hindbrain are studied.
