Sex in the '90s

Article Abstract:

Developments in the mechanisms governing sex determination in Drosophila melanogaster, Caenorhabditis elegans and mammals were presented at the first Keystone Symposia on the Molecular Basis for Differences between the Sexes on Feb. 12-18, 1995 at Tamarron, CO. It was shown that chromosomal factors remain as the primary determinants of sex and that regulatory hierarchies are responsible for the nature of signals encoding somatic sexual differentiation. Various studies on sex determination in Drosophila, C. elegans and different mammals are presented.

Two populations of node monocilia initiate left-right asymmetry in the mouse

Article Abstract:

Research shows that left-right asymmetry in the mouse is determined by ciliary mechanism, in which motile, left-right dynein-containing monocilia produces nodal flow that is sensed by nonmotile polycystin-2 containing cilia initiating calcium signal at the left border of the node.
