Spatial arrangements and associative behavior of species in an in vitro oral biofilm model

Article Abstract:

Most bacteria associated with dental plaque attach directly to teeth and coadhesion does not appear to be involved. This was the conclusion of researchers who tested biofilm production by Actinomyces naeslundii, Veillonella dispar, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Streptococcus sobrinus, and Streptococcus oralis.

Cluster structure of anaerobic aggregates of an expanded granular sludge bed reactor

Article Abstract:

The properties of biofilms from granular sludge taken from brewery wastewater are described. The biofilm forms black clusters with white spots. Electron microscopy shows the black aggregates contain hydrogenotrophic methanogens and the white spots contain acetate-utilizing methanogens.

Quorum-sensing genes in Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms: their role and expression patterns

Article Abstract:

Quorum sensing among gram-negative bacteria is an important component of biofilm production. This is done via the production of acylated homoserine lactone molecules, which in Pseudomonas aeruginosa are produced by the las and rhl genes.
