Taxonomic affinities of Audubon's Shearwater from Europa Island

Article Abstract:

Biometrics and color patterns of Audobon's Shearwaters from Europa Island are described and compared with other subspecies of the Indian Ocean. The birds belong to the Puffinus l. bailloni subspecies, and are distinct from the Comoro, Aldabra and Seychelles. A common cause, linked to geographic isolation and oceanic conditions in the Mozambique Channel, may explain their apparent isolation from Europa Island.

Species and sex-biased predation on hatchling green turtles by Frigatebirds on Europa Island, Western Indian Ocean

Article Abstract:

Research describing the feeding strategy of Frigatebirds when preying upon green turtles is presented. In particular detailed observations of differences between the strategies of Greater and Lesser Frigatebirds are analysed.

Brown Noddy chick predation by Great Frigatebirds in the northwestern Hawaiian Islands

Article Abstract:

Brown Noddy (Anous stolidus) chick predation by Great Frigatebirds (Fregata minor) on Tern Island, French Frigate Shoals, Hawaii, is specific to females. Adult females account for 64% of the predation; the remainder is due to subadults. Frigatebird predation accounts for 95% of deaths among Brown Noddy chicks less than 24 days old. Chicks hatched between mid-Feb and mid-May are more likely to survive, as Sooty Tern chicks are easier prey. Energy requirements and resource partitioning are probably responsible for the differences between male and female frigatebirds. The impact of this predation on Brown Noddies' reproductive success is significant.
