Specific isoforms of squid, a 'Drosophila' hnRNP, perform distinct roles in gurken localization during oogenesis

Article Abstract:

Squid (sqd), a Drosophila melanogaster gene, is key in localization and translational regulation of mRNAs. Mutations to sqd proteins can cause sterility in females due to gurken mislocation during oogenesis. SqdA is primarily cytoplasmic, while SqdB and SqdS are primarily located in germ-line nuclei. Differential nuclear accumulation corresponds with association of nuclear import proteins.

Deadlock, a novel protein of Drosophila, is required for germline maintenance, fusome morphogenesis and axial patterning in oogenesis and associates with centrosomes in the early embryo

Article Abstract:

The role of deadlock gene mutations in promoting germline cell maintenance, mitotic spindle stability, oocyte growth, biogenesis, and other key developments during oogenesis in Drosophila mutant embryos, is analyzed.
