Structural characteristics of halobacterial gas vesicles

Article Abstract:

The vac DNA region in halophilic archaebacteria regulates gas vesicle formation. The gas vesicles of Halobacterium salinarum strain PHH1 is spindle-shaped while those of H. salinarum PHH4 and Haloferax mediterranei are cylindrical. Complementation experiments reveal that the shape of the gas vesicles is determined by the interaction of several gene products at equilibrium. The results of transmission electron microscope studies undertaken are presented.

Evaluation of the LIVE/DEAD BacLight kit for detection of extremophilic archaea and visualization of microorganisms in environmental hypersaline samples

Article Abstract:

Extremophilic archaea that were stained with the LIVE/DEAD BacLight kit under conditions of high ionic strength and over a pH range of 2.0 to 9.3 are discussed. Potential application to future extraterrestrial halites is suggested due to microorganisms in hypersaline environmental samples that were detectable with the kit.

Very similar strains of halococcus salifodinae are found in geographically separated Permo-Triassic salt deposits

Article Abstract:

This study presents phenotypic and molecular evidence for a very close relationship between three strains of Halococcus salifodinae Blp isolated from Austrian rock salt deposits, salt mine in Germany and halite deposit in England.
