Structure of African elephant populations

Article Abstract:

A significant divergence in the structure of elephant populations from east and south Africa at the continental level was noted in a reanalysis of data about variation at the mitochondrial genes ND 5 and ND 6 in a sample of 270 African elephants. This was consistent with the 1994 finding of Georgiadis et. al. of a significant differentiation at the continental level. However, the reanalysis also showed a significant subdivision at the regional level which indicates haplotype frequency differences among the elephant populations.

Mitochondrial DNA variation of the common hippopotamus: Evidence for a recent population expansion

Article Abstract:

The first population data on hippopotamus in Africa is presented based on the patterns of mitochondrial control region sequence variation and infer the population processes that have led to the current genetic pattern in the species. Evidence that the common hippopotamus were revealed by lack of clear geographical structure among haplotypes and mismatch distributions of pairwise differences and site-frequency spectra.

Noninvasive Genotyping and Mendelian Analysis of Microsatellites in African Savannah Elephants

Article Abstract:

Genotyping errors and successes were assessed via 20 microsatellite loci drawn from fresh dung samples for the African savannah elephant. Low errors and high successes show the dependability of the simple pedigree method in noninvasive studies.
