Structure of the Mitochondrial Control Region of the Eurasian Otter (Lutra lutra; Carnivora, Mustelidae): Patterns of Genetic Heterogeneity and Implications for Conservation of the Species in Italy

Article Abstract:

The Eurasian otter's mitochondrial DNA control region sequence is compared with orthologues of nine different carnivores from six families, including extinct populations and captive-reared animals. The autochthonous samples in Italy are distinguished by an array of repeated sequences from animals that are captive-reared.

Six microsatellite loci are isolated and characterized for the giant anteater, which has a conservation status of vulnerable. The information obtained regarding heterozygosity and number of alleles will be helpful in studying genetic diversity, paternity, and population structure in this species.
