Studies on the Escherichia coli glucose-specific permease, PtsG, with a point mutation in its N-terminal amphipathic leader sequence

Article Abstract:

Results indicate that substitution of the V12F in the leader sequence of glucose permease changes the rate at which the permease is integrated into the membrane. Further, conformational changes alter the permease's catalytic properties and enhances its affinity for the transcriptional repressor, Mlc in Escherichia coli.

Major facilitator superfamily

Article Abstract:

Transport systems enable the uptake of essential nutrients and ions, and allow the excretion of end products of metabolism. Genome-sequencing data and further biochemical and molecular genetic investigations have identified several families of primary and secondary transporters. The ATP-binding cassette (ABC) superfamily and the major facilitator superfamily (MFS) have been found to occur ubiquitously in all living organism classifications. Some previous observations relating to the MFS have been analyzed and additional characteristics are noted. A rational classification system has been developed, based on phylogeny and function.
