Study on the epidemiology and control of Campylobacter jejuni in poultry broiler flocks

Article Abstract:

The possible contamination of poultry broiler flocks by Campylobacter jejuni in two farm houses were assessed by Penner serotyping and by randomly amplified polymorphic DNA-typing. In farm A, C. jejuni was isolated from the first flock, but not from subsequent flocks, suggesting that no vertical transmission occured. In farm B, C. jejuni was isolated from successive flocks, with isolates exhibiting the same DNA types. Horizontal transmission was the route suspected, which could be eliminated by applying standard measures of control.

Genotypic diversity among Campylobacter jejuni isolates in a commercial broiler flock

Article Abstract:

The genotypic stability of Campylobacter spp. isolated from the fecal samples of commercial broiler stock were analyzed to determine the degree of genotypic variation in various Campylobacter spp. strains. Polymerase chain reaction analysis of Campylobacter spp. from broiler fecal matter indicated presence of multiple genotypes of the pathogenic microbe. Genetic heterogeneity was induced by multiple environmental exposure and genetic drift within the Campylobacter population.

Bacteriophage therapy to reduce salmonella colonization of broiler chickens

Article Abstract:

The use of Salmonella phages is described to reduce the numbers of different Salmonella serotypes colonizing the ceca of commercial broiler chickens. It shows that the selection of appropriate bacteriophages and optimization of both the timing and method of phage delivery are key factors in the successful phage-mediated control of salmonellas in broiler chickens.
