Systematics of the Hawaiian "creepers" Oreomystis and Paroreomyza

Article Abstract:

The Hawaaian honeycreeper genera Oreomystis and Paroreomyza show distinct differences in coloration and plumage, bill shape, nasal setae and opercula, body proportions, vocalization and foraging behavior. Definite variations between these genera are also seen in nest construction, odor, tongue morphology, predator-response behavior and skull anatomy. These variations support the inclusion of Oreomystis as a member of the subfamily Drepanidae but the classification of Paroreomyza is much more uncertain. Due to these differences, the term 'creeper' should not be applied to Paroreomyza anymore.

Phylogenetic relationships in Bearded Manakins (Pipridae: Manacus) indicate that male plumage color is a misleading taxonomic marker

Article Abstract:

Research describing the genetic relationship of four forms of Bearded Manakin (Manacus spp.) from Central and South america is presented. Electrophoretic data indicate that the gold plumage colour in males is an unreliable taxonomic descriptor.

Effect of group size on field metabolic rate of Arabian Babblers provisioning nestlings

Article Abstract:

Research describing the metabolic rates of Arabian Babblers (Turdoides squamiceps) during cooperative breeding activity is presented. Analysis shows that female babblers' metabolic rate decreases linearly with group size.
