Tandem organization and highly disparate expression of the two laccase genes lcc1 and lcc2 in the cultivated mushroom Agaricus bisporus

Article Abstract:

Laccase is a ubiquitous oxidoreductase among fungi. It is one of the more abundant proteins in Agaricus bisporus accounting for 2% of the total protein produced during vegetative growth. There are two non-allelic genes coding for this protein, lcc1 and lcc2. Both genes are located in a cosmid clone and arranged in tandem separated by 1,562 base pairs. Reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction reveal that there is a significant difference in the rate of expression of the two genes.

Evidence for outcrossing via the buller phenomenon in a substrate simultaneously inoculated with spores and mycelium of Agaricus bisporus

Article Abstract:

A standard substrate for Agaricus bisporus cultivation simultaneously with homokaryotic mycelium from one parent and spores from a second parent is inoculated. Most or all of the sporocarps results from outcrossing between inoculated homokaryon and the inoculated heterokaryotic spores.

The cel4 gene of Agaricus bisporus encodes a beta-mannanase

Article Abstract:

The properties of the cel4 gene of Agaricus bisporus and its product are described. Beta-mannanase is an endohydrolase that may be of use in the paper pulp and food industries.
