The bacA gene, which determines bacitracin susceptibility in Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus, is also required for virulence

Article Abstract:

Research has been conducted on the Escherichia coli bacA homologues identified in Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae genomes. The role of the BacA protein as undecaprenol kinase has been investigated.

Characterization of the Streptococcus pneumoniae NADH oxidase that is required for infection

Article Abstract:

The Streptococcus pneumoniae NADH oxidase, Nox, required for infection has been studied. The importance of NADH oxidase for virulence of the organism is confirmed by findings pertaining to the significant attenuation for a nox allelic-replacement mutant in two additional S. pneumoniae models of infection. The factor was cloned, expressed and purified. Its NADH oxidase activity was confirmed. Preliminary biochemical characterization was carried out.

Matrix-binding proteins of Staphylococcus aureus: functional analysis of mutant and hybrid molecules

Article Abstract:

Matrix-binding proteins of Staphylococcus aureus are discussed based on functional analysis of mutant and hybrid molecules. To study ability of C-terminal domains of Cna and ClfA to support functional ligand-binding activity of various adhesins, chimeric proteins were made/expressed in S. aureus. Microbial surface component recognizing adhesive matrix molecules (MSCRAMMs) that interact with proteins in the extracellular matrix are expressed by S. aureus strains. Cna region B cannot support functional display of ClfA region A on the cell surface of the bacteria.
