The flgk motility operon of Borrelia burgdorferi is initiated by a sigma70-like promoter

Article Abstract:

The flagellar operons that contained putative flagellum-related genes in Borrelia burgdorferi were sequenced and analyzed to characterize the mechanisms that mediate motility in the pathogenic bacteria. Nucleotide sequence analysis of the Borrelia burgdorferi putative flagellum-related genes indicated the presence of a sigma70-like promoter that mediated the transcription of the flagellar operon. The sigma70-like promoter which was designated as flaB also mediated flagellar gene transcription.

Mycobacterial linear plasmids have an invertron-like structure related to other linear replicons in actinomycetes

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to determine the structure of linear plasmids in Mycobacterium xenopi, M. celatum, M. branderi and M. avium compared with other linear replicons in actinomycetes. Results showed that the plasmids possessed an invertron-like structure as seen from terminal inverted repeats of 45 bp and various palindromic sequences. Moreover, similarities were observed with the termini of linear replicons of Streptomyces and Rhodococcus species.

Construction and complementation of the first auxotrophic mutant in the spirochaete Leptospira meyeri

Article Abstract:

The tryptophan biosynthetic pathway in Leptospira meyeri is examined by interrupting tryptophan biosynthetic gene trpE by a kanamycin-resistance cassette in a homologous recombination. Results indicate that the trpE mutant possesses wild-type phenotype in the presence of tryptophan or anthranilate, suggesting the gene disruption results in tryptophan auxotrophy.
