The herbicide sensitivity gene CHL1 of Arabidopsis encodes a nitrate-inducible nitrate transporter
Article Abstract:
The genetic basis for the ability for nitrate uptake in plants was investigated. The study protocol involved isolation of the CHL1 gene from an Arabidopsis mutant which is resistant to the herbicide chlorate, a nitrate analog. The results showed that CHL1 encodes a protein with 12 putative membrane-spanning membranes. When injected into Xenopus oocytes, CHL1 mRNA induced nitrate- and pH-dependent membrane depolarization, inward current and nitrate uptake, suggesting that CHL1 encodes an electrogenic nitrate transporter.

A dominant mutation in the Ikaros gene leads to rapid development of leukemia and lymphoma
Article Abstract:
Studies on the lymphopoietic system of Ikaros heterozygous mice showed that the Ikaros gene is essential in lymphocyte development. Mutation in the DNA-binding domain of the gene resulted in loss of the ability of T cells to mature in the thymus. Leukemic transformation is marked by the loss of the single Ikaros wild-type allele and proceeds rapidly until the disease has completely developed in all heterozygotes.

The S. pombe cdc15 gene is a key element in the reorganization of F-actin at mitosis
Article Abstract:
The S. pombe cdc15 is a major factor in mediating the cytoskeletal rearrangements required for cytokinesis. The S. pombe cdc15 gene is essential for cell division. The expression of the cdc15 gene in G2-arrested cells induces actin rearrangement to the center of the cell. The actin rearrangement is associated with appearance of hypophosphorylated cdc15p and the formation of cdc 15p ring.
