Eye development: Governed by a dictator or a junta?

Article Abstract:

Imaginal discs, the structures giving rising to the eyes of the adult fly use the same morphogenetic molecules. The ability of genes to induce ectopic eyes provides a model of regulation for eye development, in Drosophila and in vertebrates. Pax6 in the eye. eyless (ey) is the gene encoding the Drosophila Pax6 homolog, and is essential for eye development. It is thought that downstream genes can induce ectopic eyes. dac or eya alone.

The origins of polypeptide domains

Article Abstract:

Two models of the origin of novel polypeptide domains are proposed, based on 'exonization' of intron sequences and insertion-based polymorphisms between orthologous genes. These processes are discussed, also analyzing how each might participate in the evolutionary emergence of novel polypeptide domains.
