The new federalism in life sciences policy: What states and federal governments should do to ensure progress in the life sciences

Article Abstract:

Some of the ways for state and federal governments to work together to develop coherent policies that simultaneously use scarce funding resources wisely, promote better health outcomes, and encourage economic developments are recommended. They include encouraging understanding of the relationship between direct funding for basic research and the need of infrastructure, continuation of cooperative workforce development efforts between state and federal governments at all levels, and forming a science advisory board to help sort through the major issues in state policy.

Biosense or biononsense? Years of development and hundreds of millions of dollars later, what has the CDC's syndromic surveillance program accomplished?

Article Abstract:

The shortcomings of Biosense program designed by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) officials to detect the earliest possible symptoms from a bioterror attack has cost the CDC $230 million. Many public health experts and oversight officials fear that unprecedented investigation from Senate's finance committee into the CDC's oversight of at least $6 billion in grants for emergency preparedness might result in lose of grant money or negative write-ups.
