The nucleoside-specific Tsx channel from the outer membrane of Salmonella typhimurium, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Enterobacter aerogenes: functional characterization and DNA sequence analysis of the tsx genes

Article Abstract:

The structural genes of the Tsx proteins from Salmonella typhimurium, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Enterobacter aerogenes were cloned and sequenced for the biochemical characterization of the protein. The properties of the heterologous Tsx proteins in relation to their function in nucleoside and albicidin uptake and as bacteriophage and colicin receptors were examined. Multiple sequence alignments and structural predictions of pore-forming outer-membrane proteins were considered to develop a model for the topology of the Tsx protein within the outer membrane.

Classification of Enterobacteriaceae by minimization of stochastic complexity

Article Abstract:

The efficiency of stochastic complexity (SC) minimization for the taxonomic classification of bacteria was analyzed by utilizing a large set of Enterobacteriaceae biochemical data. Application of SC minimization for the taxonomical classification of Enterobacteriaceae reduced the content of the classification. The structure of SC classification of Enterobacteriaceae strains was very rigid without any preconditions or predefined levels of similarity.

Response of Bacillus subtilis to high osmolarity: uptake of carnitine, crotonobetaine and gamma-butyrobetaine via the ABC transport system OpuC

Article Abstract:

Genetic and physiological experiments were conducted to determine the possible roles of trimethylammonium compounds such as carnitine, crotonobetaine and gamma-butyrobetaine as osmoprotectants for Bacillus subtilis. Results show that these compounds provide a certain degree of osmotic tolerance. Moreover, ABC transporter OpuC is tagged as the only high-affinity uptake system for the compounds.
