Is Spizella taverneri a species or subspecies?

Article Abstract:

A review of the classification of the subspecies, taverneri, of Brewer's Sparrow (Sizella breweri) is presented. It is argued that until reproductive isolation is proved the bird should keep subspecies status.

The taxonomic rank of Spizella taverneri: a response to Mayr and Johnson

Article Abstract:

A review of the classification of Spizella taverneri and its relation to Brewer's Sparrow (Spizella breweri) is presented. It is argued that there is sufficient biological evidence to classify taverneri as a separate species.

Refined colorimetry validates endangered subspecies of the Least Tern

Article Abstract:

The use of refined colorimetry has validated three North American subspecies of Least Tern, namely, Sterna antillarum antillarum, S. a. browni, and S. a. athalassos, contrary to the hypothesis that no significant differences on seven morphologic features have been determined among them. Seasonal differences were shown by four of nine color characters, while the sexes differed in lightness and hue of dorsum and hind neck. Conservationists must appreciate the validity of S. a. athalassos and S. a. browni, both of which have been classified as endangered.
