The theoretical distribution of lengths of intact chromosome segments around a locus held heterozygous with backcrossing in a diploid species

Article Abstract:

An analysis was conducted to determine the how much the length of intact chromosome segments is reduced following repeated backcrosses to the original fully heterozygous F1 chromosome. Based on the analysis, the exact equations for both the average and the standard deviation of lengths of intact chromosome segments surrounding a locus held heterozygous for any number of generations of backcrossing. The analysis also showed that the use of the widely used estimates developed by R.A. Fisher results in significant overestimations of the true parametric values.

Quantitative genetics of 4X-2X hybrid populations with First-Division Restitution and Second-Division Restitution 2n gametes produced by diploid parents

Article Abstract:

The genetic value of 4x-2x hybrids produced by the crosses between tetraploids and diploid genitors with 2n gametes is described by a new model. The model considers the genetic consequences of the second Division Restitution (SDR) and the First Division Restitution (FDR) meiosis. Numerous parameters which are required for the classical method are not required by the new model. The usual covariances and genetic variances between relative plants are provided by the model.

Poly(dc) segments and cloning artifacts in databases

Article Abstract:

Contamination of sequence databases by artifactual sequences significantly decreases the reliability of these databases for comparative studies. Screening of databases enables the identification of a new type of contamination involving various sequences containing poly(dC) segments, which are wrongly assigned to few of these sequences. 2000 sequences with poly(dC) segments longer than 10 nucleotides are identified by screening GenBank and EMBL databases.
