Translational regulation in development

Article Abstract:

The translational regulation of mRNA can be brought about by stabilization of 5'UTRs by proteins, masking of RNA to silent mRNP particles, modulation of poly(A) tail length or polyadenylation, trans-acting sequences in the 3'UTR, protein gradients, cell-type switches, and regulation by complementary RNA. Increase in the length of the poly(A) tail increases the rate of translation. Localized mRNA is translated at a faster rate, as in nos and osk mRNA in oocytes, and in this case poly(A) tail length does not play any role in controlling translation.

Rethinking the microprocessor

Article Abstract:

Some of the structural features of the primary transcript are reported that ensure that the Drosha-DGCR8 enzyme complex liberates precisely the correct precursor sequence, enabling production of a fully functional microRNAs (miRNA). The understanding of how DGCR8 positions Drosha to promote productive pri-miRNA cleavage should help in the search for new miRNA genes and in the design of artificial miRNA genes.

Targeted mRNA degradation by double-stranded RNA in vitro

Article Abstract:

Results show that involvement of double-stranded RNA interference (RNAi) in the gene-silencing events is sequence specific and mediated only by double stranded RNAi targeting specific mRNA for degradation.
