The Streptococcus thermophilus autolytic phenotype results from a leaky prophage

Article Abstract:

Results show that Streptococcus thermophilus strains acquire the autolytic properties through a leaky prophage. Data further indicate that the phage gene encoded proteins are involved in the prophage mediated cell lysis.

Two groups of bacteriophages infecting Streptococcus thermopilus can be distinguished on the basis of mode of packaging and genetic determinants for major structural proteins

Article Abstract:

Thirty bacteriophages of Streptococcus thermophilus have been studied to know more about the DNA restriction profiles, DNA homology, structural proteins, packaging mechanism and the host range data. The presence of certain genes and DNA fragments have also been investigated. S. thermopilus is an element of thermophilic dairy starter cultures used in making yogurt and cheeses. This type of bacteria is prone to phage attacks that result in slow lactic acid fermentation.

Identification and characterization of a lysis module present in a large proportion of bacteriophages infecting Streptococcus thermophilus

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the characterization of the lytic module of an Streptococcus thermophilus bacteriophage consisting of three adjacent genes. The lysis module has a lysin gene, and two putative holin-encoding genes. Results based on Southern blotting experiments reveal that at least one of the three components of the lysis module is present in all members of a large collection of bacteriophages which suggest that the components are widespread among bacteriophages that infect S. thermophilus.
