Using recombination to detect sexual reproduction: The contrasting cases of Placozoa and C. elegans

Article Abstract:

Determination of whether a population is sexual or asexual is difficult, but a study used recombination analysis to detect signs of sexual reproduction in a species of Placozoa, which are the simplest known free-living animals. The methodology was also effective in determining sexual reproduction in a population of Caenorhabditis elegans.

Steps in the evolution of heteromorphic sex chromosomes

Article Abstract:

Published results on sex chromosomes in a diversity of species are studied. The study is focused on several fish and some plants whose sex chromosomes appear to be 'young' as only parts of the chromosome are nonrecombining, while the rest is pseudoautosomal.
