A Janus-headed model of ethical theory: looking two ways at business-society issues

Article Abstract:

A clearer understanding of the contribution of ethical theory to business ethics is required, but the traditional model of ethical theory presenting utilitarianism and formalism, or deontology, as antagonistic, mutually exclusive methods is lacking. A model of ethical theory is proposed that makes it easier to understand the problem by presenting ethical relationships between business and society as a process rather than simply a confrontation. The Janus-headed model of ethics, named after the two-headed Roman god of gates and entryways, shows the complementary nature of business and society and allows a new classification of issues involving business and society by illuminating their dual nature.

Aesthetic components of management ethics

Article Abstract:

'Knowing that' and 'knowing how' sum up the twofold applicability of ethics in the field of management behavior. Formalist ethical theory provides a framework that identifies broad rules and principles, while utilitarian ethics, in setting up decision-related guidance, provides a practical realization of the broader formalist theories; together, they complement and balance each other. Management is viewed as aesthetic as well as ethical.

Rules for making exceptions to rules

Article Abstract:

This paper examines the ethical aspects of administrative rule making with the specific purpose of explicating the "metarules" for rule construction and enforcement. It does this by reformulating classical and recent developments in ethical theory into somewhat less abstract guidelines for use in decision making. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)
