A Positive Peso

Article Abstract:

The weakness and unpredictability of the Mexican economy have made investing in the peso a risky business. Worse yet, the 1983 drop in oil prices is making it difficult for Mexico to pay the interest due on its large foreign debt. However, the peso's relative strength - particularly when compared to the currencies of neighboring countries - is leading to renewed investor interest. The discovery of oil in Mexico encouraged it to borrow against expected revenues, and it has ended up deep in debt. Analysts believe new government policies are largely responsible for the peso's rally, but not all the analysts are enthusiastic about investing in this currency.

The Dollar: A Better Haven than Gold?

Article Abstract:

The United States dollar has been soaring on the international currency market. High United States interest rates have attracted foreign money, driving up the dollar's value. In addition, economic recovery and falling inflation have also contributed to the dollar's strength. Many foreign investors also regard the United States as the safest possible haven for their investments. Interviews with a variety of currency analysts are presented.

Cocoa: A Bull Market for 'Brave Investors'

Article Abstract:

Severe weather conditions are rumored to be damaging the 1983 cocoa crop. The possibility of deficit production has started to drive up the price of cocoa. However, many cocoa brokers admit they have no idea where cocoa prices are heading. The 1983 crop is said to contain a record number of pods, yet the pods are reportedly very small. Interviews with several cocoa experts are included.
