A definition of theory: research guidelines for different theory-building research methods in operations management

Article Abstract:

Theory-building as a basis of empirical research in operations management derives its benefits from the basic qualities of theories and theory building. Theory formulation as a process must endow the theory with the following qualities: conceptual definitions, domain limitations, relationship-building and predictions, all of which serves to contextualize a subject into a specific frame of study. This enables the result of the study to satisfy the criteria for 'good theories' which include abstraction, generalizability, internal consistency and fecundity.

Relationships between theory-driven empirical research in operations management and other disciplines

Article Abstract:

Theory-driven empirical research in operations management is fast becoming the norm due to the applicability of the theory formulation process in defining the key elements of the research subject. This includes the interpretation of the subject by the observer, as the well the the final consensus on the interpretation of observations. Theory-driven empirical research allows for the exploration of new alternatives for the observed phenomena.
