A great leap forward; Asia's telecommunications industry jumps into the 21st century - without ever seeing the 20th

Article Abstract:

Asia's telecommunications is moving rapidly into the 21st century as countries from Indonesia to India implement the most state-of-the-art telecommunications technologies. Several countries are installing fiber-optic lines, digital switches, wireless network hubs and base stations at a screamingly fast pace. For example, Bangkok is implementing an advanced wireless communications service, while Vietnam is installing cellular services and exploring Internet connections. Asia's sudden desire for advanced telecommunications is mainly due to simple economic necessities. Various countries have realized that reliable telecommunications networks are essential for national growth. The technology building spree that is taking place throughout Asia means substantial consequences and opportunities for foreign suppliers.

'Telecom hotels' find interest once more

Article Abstract:

Real estate developers report that interest in buildings that house high-tech equipment to power telecommunications firms, so-called telecom hotels, has increased significantly in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Companies appear to be looking for distributed office space and distributed communications systems that are not housed all in one building, to be used for data centers or disaster recovery.
