Article Abstract:

Frank and Rosie Cousins, both in their 70s, live in a tar-paper shack in the Tennessee mountains. They live without hot water or indoor plumbing, but they express satisfaction with their living situation. Almir and Tania de Souza live in a cement block house with a corrugated tin roof in a poverty-stricken district of Rio de Janeiro. They rely on a neighborhood well for water, and illegally funnel electricity from utility lines. Like the Cousins, the de Souzas have created a home in their small space.
