A synthesis of decision models for tool management in automated manufacturing

Article Abstract:

A model is constructed to describe decision-making intool management systems. Automation of these systems requires attention to suchconcerns as systems design, planning and control, as tooling systems affect decisions on design, machine loading, job batching, scheduling and routing. Such decisions include maximizing tool-mix inventories, loading jobs and tools onto machines, economizing operation processing rates and optimizing machining parameters. A review of alternative tool management models leads to the development of a comprehensive decision-making reasource planning model that distinguishes tool management concerns on the level of tools, machines and systems. Decisions made on a certain level are affected by decisions made on levels immediately above. However, feedback of lower level information to higher level decisions occurs.

Minimizing mean squared deviation of completion times about a common due date

Article Abstract:

A nonpreemptive single machine scheduling problem is addressed in which all tasks have the same due date and have zero ready time. The scheduling goal is to reduce as much as possible mean squared deviation (MSD) of job completion times around the due date. Such an irregular performance measure is appropriate at times when both earliness and tardiness are subject to penalty, and when major deviations from completion time from due dates are undesirable. A special MSD problem case known as the unconstrained MSD problem is demonstrated to be equivalent to Merten and Muller's 1972 completion time variance problem.
