Adaptation on rugged landscapes

Article Abstract:

The interrelationship between processes of organizational level change and population selection forces is depicted via a simple model. A major property of the model is that the impact of the attributes that constitute the organizational form on organizational fitness is interactive. The fitness landscapes becomes 'rugged' due to such interaction effects. An organization's form at its establishment has a permeating effect on its future form in the presence of multiple peaks in the fitness landscape, since the peak that an organization discovers is influenced by its beginnings in the space of alternative organizational forms. The ability of established organization to adapt to changing environments hinges on the degree to which elements of organizational form interact in their impact on organizational fitness.
