Advanced Micro's results decline from prior quarter

Article Abstract:

Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD) expects its 3rd qtr F& 1991 sales and earnings to be lower than the previous quarter despite strong sales of its new Am386 microprocessor chips. Third qtr net income will be 2 to 17 cents a share, compared to 17 cents a share or a net income of $17.3 million on sales of $296.8 million in 2nd qtr FY 1991. AMD announced the results in an attempt to stifle rumors about a loss and drastic sales decreases. In 3rd qtr FY 1990, AMD had sales of $254.2 million and a net loss of $17.8 million, or 25 cents a share. Sales of AMD's Am386 microprocessor, which is compatible with Intel Corp's popular 386 line, were $59 million for the quarter and $110 million to date in FY 1991. AMD blames the company's overall decrease in earnings on a shrinking market for certain programmable chips and severe price slashing of Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EPROM) chips, two markets that account for a substantial part of its sales.

Advanced Micro results spurted in 1st quarter

Article Abstract:

Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD) reports a 49 percent increase in sales for 1st qtr FY 1992, as it continues to take market share from competitor Intel Corp. AMD produces clone versions of Intel's microprocessors, and its 80386 version, released in Mar 1991, has proven so successful that its release precipitated a series of lucrative quarters following several quarters of losses. Even though AMD's earning exceeded analysts' estimates, investors are still cautious because of Intel's copyright suit over the 386 chip and doubts about a release of an 80486 clone. AMD netted $84.9 million, or 90 cents a share, for the 1st qtr 1992, in comparison with 1st qtr 1991 net of only $4.2 million. Sales of the 386 chip totaled over 2 million for 1st qtr 1992, more than its total sales for 1991. In spite of the world economy and soft sales in Japan, AMD expects modest growth in 2nd qtr 1992.
