Age of ideology: Murray Kempton on the 30's

Article Abstract:

Columnist and historian Murray Kempton deserves the respect he has earned for his insightful observations of political and social movements. He understood the forces that influenced the major political movements of the 1930s resulting in extraordinary clashes between capitalism and communism, democracy and tyranny, wealth and poverty. It was a decade in which leaders and activists demonstrated an unwavering dedication to their beliefs. Above all, he perceived how their upbringing influenced their decisions either to protect the US social structure or to challenge its foundations.

Queen of the muckrackers

Article Abstract:

Jessica Mitford is recognized as a great muckraking journalist because of her research on unethical funeral practices. Mitford's 1963 book, 'The American Way of Death,' caused funeral homes to change their practices. She is remembered for her passion for life and her humor.
