USA Networks unit, CitySearch to merge

Article Abstract:

USA Networks Inc. is expected to announce a merger between its Ticketmaster Online subsidiary with CitySearch Inc. Under the terms of the deal, CitySearch will be valued at approximately $260 million. The merger is an attempt by Barry Diller's USA Networks to expand into the online commerce market. CitySearch had proposed to sell approximately 20% of its shares in August 1998 in an inital public offering worth $52 million.

American Express authorizes buyback of up to 9% of stock

American Express Co. will purchase back up to 9% of its common stock up to 2000 or 2001 in an attempt to increase the prices of its stock. By June 1999, the company will repurchase up to 40 million outstanding shares out of a possible 457 million. American Express has been seriously affected by the instability in worldwide markets. American Express is a travel and financial-services company.
