Amid mixed profit reports, Intel talks of its fastest chip

Article Abstract:

Intel and HP designers spoke publicly for the first time on the IA-64 ultrafast microprocessor chip that the companies hope can revolutionize computing between 2000 and 2010. Intel and HP are designing the IA-64 chip architecture for initial use in machines that can handle complex corporate and engineering computer assignments. These IA-64 chips are expected to at least triple the speed of any current Intel chip on the commercial market. The first IA-64 chip, scheduled for 1999 market release, would boost information processing time to 64 bits at a time. The code-named Merced chip not only would double the rate of Intel's top current chips, it also would be capable of parallel processing. Intel, meanwhile, disclosed earnings for 3rd qtr 1997 of 88 cents a share, down from 91 cents projected by analysts who were surveyed by First Call. Some of the loss can be attributed to competitors' price pressure on the existing Pentium line of microprocessor chips for PCs.
