Heart devices market battle is revving up

Article Abstract:

The Intermedics pacemaker division of Swiss-based Sulzer Medica Ltd. will be acquired by Guidant Corp. in a deal that has been valued between $775 million and $850 million. Industry analysts have said that the deal will solidify Guidant's number two position in the $4 billion cardiac-rhythm devices market. Guidant, which is based in Indianapolis, In., plans to take advantage of Intermedics 200-person US sales force and 200-person overseas sales force in an increasingly competitive market for cardiac-rhythm devices.
