Angola: peace talks open in Ethiopia

Article Abstract:

The Angolan government and representatives of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) initiated talks in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Jan 28, 1993, for the purpose of ending the civil strife in Angola. An agreement negotiated in May 1991 ending their civil war broke down in 1992.

Seles, Edberg retain U.S. Open titles

Article Abstract:

Monica Seles defeated Arantxa Sanchez Vicario to win the the 1992 US Open tennis tournament. Stefan Edberg won the men's title by besting Peter Sampras. The doubles competitions were won by Natlaya Zvereva and Gigi Fernandez and by Jim Grabb and Richey Reneberg.

Summer Olympic Games open in Barcelona

Article Abstract:

The opening ceremonies of the Summer Olympics began on Jul 25, 1992, in Barcelona, Spain. Over 170 countries participated in the games. Three UK athletes and US hammer thrower Jud Logan tested positive for drugs.
