Back on track: BRW's quarterly survey of economists shows that the recovery is a reality and confidence is returning

Economists are generally optimistic about the state of the Australian economy. Spending is being prompted by rising house prices, while exports are rising as a result of the weak Australian dollar. Salomon Smith Barney Chief Economist Paul Brennan forecasts 2.5% GDP growth in 2000 to 2001.

Article Abstract:

The Australian population is aging, and the baby-boom generation will precipitate cultural and economical changes in Australia as they reach their 50s in the early 21st century. The 4.1 million people born between 1946 and 1960 will starting moving past age 55 from 2001. Access Economics forecasts that manufacturers will have to make smaller cars, looser-cut clothing, and so on, to accommodate a longer-lived population. The decrease of compulsory retirement and the increase of the self-employed aging may contribute to a worker shortage.
