Haiti: Preval elected Aristide's successor

Article Abstract:

Rene Preval was elected the next president of Haiti with 87.9% of the vote in elections held Dec 17, 1995. The election was observed to ensure that no fraud occurred and voting was light. Aristide backed Preval in the election.

White mayor elected in Gary, Indiana

King won 78% of the vote over three African American candidates to become the first white mayor of Gary, IN, since the 1960s. African Americans account for 85% of the city's population.
