Belts tighten and R&D is feeling the squeeze

Australian manufacturers are cutting research and development budgets as they prepare for worsening economic conditions. Spending on R&D is predicted to be $2.6 billion for 2002-03, a slight increase over the previous year. Many analysts are concerned that Australian businesses do not invest enough in R&D.
