Breathe easy, and make money

Article Abstract:

Australian industries have worked hard to reduce pollutant emissions to the air, but such measures have been costly. Some Australian companies have been creating systems that analyze how pollutants interact in the environment, as a means to lead to cleaner industry production methods, but less-costly alternatives are being developed. CSIRO scientists have inexpensively proved the effectiveness of a Swedish air sampler, which measures the amount of pollution people inhale. CSIRO is also involved in developing new ways of generating power.

Lend a bionic ear to innovative research

Article Abstract:

Australia's service sector risks being forced out of its own markets if research and innovation are not encouraged. The United States, Asia, and Europe are well ahead of Australia in service innovation. However, the Australian services sector is receptive to innovation. CSIRO will be spending more than $10 million in 1999 on research for the services sector, including health, science, finance, tourism, and retail trade.
