Brisbane Broncos, brought to you by ... who's that?

Article Abstract:

The Brisbane Broncos, a rugby league club, and 131Shop.com.au.Ltd., a start-up electronic commerce business, on July 28, 1999, signed a sponsorship contract worth more than $1 million a year. When negotiations began, 131 Shop had no net worth, but five days later, it raised $7 million. The Bronco sponsorship is part of the $11 million that 131 Shop plans to spend on advertising in its first year.

Rafter's business stays in the family

US Open tennis champion Pat Rafter's career is being managed in an unusually relaxed style. His brother Stephen is his manager. Stephen is an accountant living in Maroochydore, Queensland, Australia, and he expects to spend no more than about four weeks with Pat in 1998. Pat's mother, Jocelyn, living near Brisbane, books Pat's travel and accommodations. Pat, meanwhile, has a home in Bermuda.
